The North Half is over and done with, and it was a beautiful day for it, albeit, fairly warm. What a difference one year makes! Last year only two people made it to the state meet, Julien Lewis (100m dash-7th place) and Craig Armstead (shot put, 6th place). Although we had a few people this year who probably should have made it, but did not, we still had significantly more people qualify this year with 8 individuals (two individuals qualified in 2 events) and two relay teams!
Lets start with our distance runners, because I get to help train them and know them better. Walker Mattox (14 years old, 8th grade) qualified in the 3200m race coming in 4th at 12:19 and in the 1600m coming in 4th with a time of 5:37. Mary Elizabeth (10th grade) qualified in the 800m race with a a 3rd place finish with a time of 2:29! Joseph [MacGown] (14 years old, 9th grade) qualified in the 3200 m race coming in 4th with a 10:24. Kamau Bostic (junior) qualified in the 1600m race coming in 3rd with a 4:43 and the 800m race coming in 1st with a 158.55. I am ecstatic that our we will have a boy and a girl in each of the three distance events at the state meet These guys and girls, none of whom are seniors, have worked their butts off, and their hard work has paid off! Abigail Arinder, also an 8th grader, did a great job PR’ing in the 3200m race with a time of 12:50 and coming in 5th.
Our other 4 qualifiers were Julien Lewis (senior), the lone returning state meet participant from last year, who qualified in the 100m race (3rd, 10:87). Jacoby Smith came in 2nd in the 400m race (50:86), Charles Hughes came in 4th in the 110m hurdles (15:35), and Jalan Catledge came in 4th in the triple jump with a 43 ft 4 in jump.
The 4 X 200m relay team (Julien Lewis, Gabe Miles, Devin Mitchell, and Jacoby Smith) finished 2nd with a time of 1:28.74, and our 4 X 400m team finished 1st with a 3:25.04! That team consisted of Jacoby Smith, Charles Hughes, Kamau Bostic, and Jalan Catledge.
Congrats to all!!!!!! Thanks to the MSU track team for allowing us to have our meet on their new track!! And thanks to everyone who came out and supported us today. You know who you are: Steve Shaffer, Ethan Musser, and many others. Also, congrats to Steve who ran a 5k on campus this morning coming in 2nd overall!
