Rest Week and Kayaking at Noxubee National Wildlife Refuge

Sunday, some of the running goobs: Lucas, Max, and Brent, came out to my house for some kind of weird trail/beer mile. Yep, Max is heading to Germany and wanted to show us how Germans roll.  Well,  right after they arrived it started pouring and thundering and stuff. So, we did run a bit, but cut it short. Still drank the beers, and I cooked burgers. We hung for a while and laughed at Max, cause he is a funny joker.

Monday, After work, I met Max and Brent for a run thru town. No Joseph today, as I told that mug to take off a week or some running, chill out for a bit. And, yes, last week I thought it was the final run with Max, but, he managed to squeeze in one more. His parents and sister are arriving later in the evening from Germany. They will only be here a day or two, then they will take their trippindicular triathletic goober of a son back to Germany while stopping in Colorado along the way. Joseph did not join us, as I told him to take a week or two off from running and just chill. He worked pretty hard this past year with his running really peaking late December to early January when he was running 10 miles at 5:33-5:34 pace. He had another nice cycle this spring. But, really the last month has been fairly easy with a couple of slower tempos and 1000m intervals. The goal now is simply to build his mileage up this summer and remain injury free before heading to Savannah to run and go to school in the fall. Back to the run today. HOT! We started at about 5:45 pm, still hot. Max and I did 5 miles, and Brent added another bit, probably getting in about 5.5 miles. Our first mile was 7:40, then we hit a 6:53 mile, then a 7:00, somewhere about 2.5 miles is where we parted ways with Brent. Max slowed down a little on the way back, as I finished up with a 7:13 and 7:20 for the last one. Probably would have been slower than that, but we got a brief rain shower with about a mile to go. Whew. Somehow, with the combination of hitting the lights right and running faster, Brent caught up with me with about a half mile to go. Pretty impressive run there Captain America. Max finished up about a minute back. After hanging out stretching and recovering from the awesome humidity, those two goofball jumped on their bikes and headed home.

Wednesday-Friday, I basically joined Joseph in taking  a few day off myself, although I did some type of workout pretty much each day splitting it into pushup, pullups, and abs one day; militaries and curls another; and so forth. Busy week anyway, as I had a art show opening Thursday evening. That took some getting ready for!

Saturday, Slept late, then did some yardwork: mowing, weedeating, etc. Yard is coming along. Twenty years ago it was a field. Not anymore! Later in the afternoon, Joseph and I loaded the kayaks and headed to the refuge for some relaxed paddling. We met Greg Martin and Joe Witt there, and they paddled around in Greg’s canoe. Greg is an amazing artist from Los Angeles who know teaches at MSU. They are extremely lucky to have someone of his caliber! Joe is a fairly new Philosophy professor here at MSU, and he has a great beard.

Sunday, Joseph and I met Lucas, Brent, and Jorge Villarreal for a 6 mile run late afternoon. Nice to have Jorge the curly haired Colombian out there with us. Jorge is a former MSU XC and track runner who graduated yesterday with a degree in Biology. With the MSU student’s mostly having left town enmasse, the campus and town was fairly deserted, which made the run safer than usual! Pretty day too, with temps in mid 70’s. Nothing crazy today, with Brent and Joseph a bit ahead with 7:15 average mile pace. I ambled along with Lucas and Jorge at about 7:23 pace. Lucas had biked 90 miles or so earlier in the day in his quest to become a triathlete. His first race is next Saturday. Good run. Easy. Beautiful day.
